Home from the war

So I have a story to share with you all. It’s about one of my brides Trisha who is getting married next April. I met Trisha over the summer. She came in for an initial meeting with her Maid of Honor and we hit it off straight away! They were so giggly and excited about the wedding plans I couldn’t help but get right in to it with them! We talked about color schemes, table decor, logistics and the moment where she would see her groom. I love those chats.

So just last week I sent Trisha an email just to say hi and it bounced back. I called her to see what was up and, as it turns out, her life has taken a 180!

Here is the email she sent me:

“I am so sorry I missed your call yesterday, so much has changed since we last met! Everything with the wedding is still the same, it’s just that I am moving to Alaska tomorrow! My fiance was actually injured while on tour in Afghanistan in June. He was extremely lucky, and thankfully only broke his femur in a roadside bomb attack. I was sent to Walter Reed Army Medical center to take care of him for 2 1/2 months and when I got back to RI we decided that because we were able to be with each other, neither of us could just go back to being apart. My MOH has been a saint and was able to pull a shower together in a matter of weeks and it was actually this Sunday, and I managed to get the rest of my vendors this past month. The past few weeks have just been insanely busy that it never occurred to me that because I was moving I would need to set up a new email account! I apologize again!!!

Nick’s is ok. He was in a wheel chair, then went to crutches and is now using a cane. Only time will tell if he has a limp, because the break was so close to his hip. They had to dislocate his left hip and hollow out the bone so they could insert a titanium rod. The surgery killed all his nerves and muscles so he had to learn how to lift his leg, and now he is learning how to regain balance, but his attitude couldn’t be better. He wishes he was back in Afghanistan with everyone. He’s not a fan of needing help! Men can be so stubborn! He is back in Alaska because that is where he was stationed before he deployed. As for being home for good, I’m not sure. Right now he is limited to what he can do, but the possibility of sending him again is still there. He wasn’t able to be sent right away because he had less than six months left in this tour, but they could send him back in the future. I can’t even explain to you all the emotions that I went through when I got the call. I am so thankful it was him, because if it was anyone else I’m not sure I would have believed them. Nick told me he broke his leg and then said there was a bomb, and that’s all I managed to focus on. Being in DC with him and being able to help him get better was incredible. I had to be by his side for every doctor’s appointment, physical therapy appointment. I basically had to be his shadow, which is why I am moving sooner. I can’t go back to not seeing him, after being able to see him everyday. Being home for this month and a half was hard enough, but now I have to go through the goodbyes with family and friends and that is just as hard.”

Nick,

Cheers to your bravery.

Trisha,

Cheers to your sweet-hearted nature.

No matter what happens on your wedding day, what details you choose, what color palette wins out, no matter what the weather does, it will be beautiful. Pure and simple.

I can’t wait!
